The Siemens cafeteria in Wendell, NC was originally a tired, utilitarian space—designed for quick pass-throughs rather than connection. Worn finishes, dated layouts, and limited amenities reflected an earlier era of workplace design. The renovation reimagined the cafeteria as a vibrant social and cultural hub that now serves both office staff and factory employees, transforming how people experience the workplace every day.

Renamed Lizard Lick Café, the new space blends warmth, whimsy, and biophilic design to create an environment that feels welcoming, human, and distinctly local. Natural wood tones, moss accents, and organic textures soften the industrial context, while playful design elements add personality and spark conversation. The result is a space that feels less like a cafeteria and more like a community gathering place.

Functionality was elevated alongside aesthetics. The redesigned layout supports fresh meal service and flexible seating, encouraging employees to linger, connect, and recharge rather than rush in and out. What was once a transient space is now one where people choose to spend time—chatting with coworkers, building relationships, and strengthening workplace culture.

The project also prioritized inclusivity and employee well-being. New, thoughtfully designed restrooms and a dedicated mother’s room were integrated into the renovation, reflecting Siemens’ commitment to supporting a diverse workforce and modern needs.

Today, Lizard Lick Café stands as a clear example of how interior design can reshape behavior, morale, and community. The transformation goes beyond finishes—it has fundamentally changed how the space is used and valued, turning an overlooked cafeteria into the heart of the Wendell campus.
